In Georgia, candidates for the U.S. Senate need to receive at least 50% vote in order to win. After no candidate succeeded in either of the state’s two Senate races, voters will have have a chance to cast new votes in run-off elections on January 5th, 2021. If Republicans win even one of these races, they will control the Senate and work to undermine the Biden administration at every turn. The stakes couldn’t be higher.
Senior Pastor of the Ebenezer Baptist Church – the very same church Martin Luther King, Jr. led – Rev. Warnock received the highest percentage of votes in a crowded special election. In the run-off, he will be facing Sen. Kelly Loeffler. Loeffler has come under fire for drastically downplaying the threat posed by Covid-19, while simultaneously making millions in the stock market thanks to a Senate briefing on the topic in January. Loeffler was investigated for insider trading, but the investigation was dropped after her husband made a $1 million donation to the Trump campaign.
Jon Ossoff is an investigative journalist and rising star of the Democratic Party. In January’s run-off, he will be facing off against Senator David Purdue. Like Loeffler, Purdue has similarly downplayed the risk of Covid-19, and has also been investigated for insider trading. Since then, Purdue’s campaign has made headlines for creating antisemitic ads against Ossoff, and following a disastrous debate performance in October, Purdue has refused to publicly debate Ossoff again.
